What this decision is really about
An app can indicate signal levels and channels. It does not replace calibrated measurement, requirements analysis, building modelling or documented acceptance.
Technical value does not come from one product or an isolated metric. Requirements, risks, implementation and later operations must fit together and remain verifiable against clear criteria.
What an app does well
It can show visible networks, channels, broad signal trends and obvious coverage gaps. This is useful for a small repeatable comparison on the same device.
Why numbers are not automatically comparable
Antennas, drivers, operating systems, sampling and device orientation influence results. One dBm value also says little about interference, throughput, roaming or a specific application.
What professional design adds
It connects measurements with usage zones, capacity, building conditions, mounting, cabling, PoE and segmentation. Assumptions and boundaries are documented rather than disappearing in a screenshot.
The pragmatic decision
An app is often enough for initial troubleshooting. Structured design is useful when multiple access points, critical applications, difficult buildings or investment decisions are involved.
Practical decision criteria
1. Apps help with initial observations and repeatable basic checks.
2. Device, operating system and method influence readings.
3. Capacity, roaming and application quality require more context.
4. Business-critical sites need documented criteria.
Preparation: information to have ready
Floor plans, sites and the applications actually in use should be available. This includes device classes, user counts, expected peak loads and areas with special operational importance.
Known faults, existing network segments, provider links and administration paths are documented before changes. This keeps assumptions, measurements and later decisions traceable.
Scope boundaries and dependable claims
Specific coverage, capacity, outage or security claims can only be assessed after the environment is understood. This article provides a technical framework; binding design, legal assessment and project-specific approval each require a clearly defined engagement.
